11 December 2013

Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens is now on our recipient list for Community Service Bee quilts.

CHARLES, please add this organization to the Community Service section of the website.
 See letter from them below.

We had 29 finished quilts before Phyllis brought in three more, making it 32. The Busy Bees  also finished up binding on some quilts - at least two more, but I think it was five more - (not sure if the other 3 were the ones Phyllis brought in or ones that were finished at the
Bee today and put on the delivery cart just as Frances was taking it to the car)

so looks like 37 finished quilts. Whoo hooo Y'all are fantastic!

PARTY NEXT WEEK - Sylvia will bring a coffee maker. It can also do hot water for tea and hot chocolate. Contact her if you have any questions about that.

Fun starts  at 10:30 in the Fiber Studio and we'll probably start eating all the goodies we bring at about 11:15
so we can be done about noon.

Also, for those wondering about the new sewing machine saga - got a voice mail while at the Guild meeting last night saying the Pfaff Performance 5.0 machines are on BACK ORDER and are EXPECTED to arrive next week, so I "should have one soon."  I sure hope that means before pigs can fly.

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK, -  ESPECIALLY APPRECIATED BY OUR RECIPIENTS THIS TIME OF YEAR, AND CERTAINLY ALL YEAR LONG.

I hope y'all had a delicious Thanksgiving with the people you love.
We have delicious fabric just waiting for our creative juices to bring beauty into the world on Wednesday.
Joan finished quilting a baker's dozen of tops that she picked up before the retreat, all we need to do is get the binding for them.  By the way, she'll be having foot surgery soon, so won't be long-arming during her recovery. Rumor has it that she'll catch up on some reading.
Ellen will bring whatever quilted tops she had time to do, some had binding picked out, some didn't. We can take care of those, too!
Cya Wednesday!

Hi Terry,
Tell the charity group to get their needles and threads ready.  I just finished 13 charity tops, all quilted and ready for binding.  Most are larger size, some are twin size, only one is preemie size.

I'll bring them Monday Dec 2, along with all the scraps for the dogs and leftover fabric for scrap quilts.

see you soon.

Here are a few pictures.

The Oriental and red-white-black ones are larger, so backing will be pieced from   large scraps. There were a lot of "oooh's and aaahhh's" heard when they were put on the design wall.

Frances L also brought in a top.

Hello Busy Bees
Some of our members are on a quilting retreat and we know they are having a lot of fun.
Maybe we can consider that we are in a mini-quilting retreat, too.
Please bring suggestions for making kits for the guild meeting from Christmas  and Hanukkah fabrics that are overflowing one of the storage crates.  Maybe it will make some people who receive a finished one feel right at
Also mentally prepare yourselves for a lot of quilted tops that will need binding. We don't expect them to be back to us until after the Guild meeting due to the retreat; i.e. Nov 13th and 20th.  Between Ellen and Joan, there will be about 23 - 25 tops (some Ellen brought in last week).  I'd like to take get bindings cut   so whatever tops that need binding can be taken to next week's guild meeting.
Cya tomorrow if you can make it.

We need to have a look at the calendar and decide what we want to do about meeting on Wednesdays in November, December and early January so Charles can go ahead and update our Bee on the CPQ calendar.
Wed, Nov 27, is the day before Thanksgiving. My guess is everyone will be busy with preparations and won't be able to come to the Bee, so no Bee that day.
December 25 is a Wednesday so we won't have the Bee that Wednesday. Does the group want to have our regular Bee all 3 Wednesdays before that? If I don't hear back from you on that, then I'll figure that's okay, and Charles can put us on the Calendar for Dec 4, 11, and 18.
January 1 is also on a Wednesday, so no Bee that day. We'll plan on having the Bee back on our regular schedule on January 8.

Beautiful work, y'all! and
Thanks Frances and Nancy
for taking the quilts there.

Here's a Thank You note from Lynne Nagy, Office Manager at the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support, that is for all the "merry quilters" at cotton Patch.

Nancy, is it too late to include this in the newsletter? Sue Brassard and Nancy Bruce represented CPQ at the Harvest Festival, Thursday, Oct 24, in the Fiber Studio at the Lyndon House.

Several tops with backs were sent home with Ellen, so maybe next week or two we'll have to find binding and get them finished. Thanks to Jan who took quilts & binding to be done at home.

Judy and Nancy (not shown) really had
a good time figuring out those cute squares,
none of which were the same size.
The colors sure are kid friendly.

Shirley's helping her parents
but had time to make
2 preemie quilts.

 Susan sewing on the
yellow setting strips.

Here are 4 of  the Santa
year-a-round blocks.

Sue pieced some various sized scraps into
rows Tuesday night and brought them in.
Setting strips were found, cut and
she's measuring so it will be visually
pleasing.  I think Sue was thinking about
the yellow setting for the scrappy strips.
Another one of Sue, this time measuring
so a back could be found that would fit.

I  delivered 18 children's quilts to Prevent Child Abuse today.  These are two of the case workers who were thrilled to get them.  They were trying to decide which quilt would best go to a couple of families when I left.

Thanks, ladies, for all your hard work!!!  We are appreciated!

Hello y'all busy bees.

Looks like Charles has some great ideas, too!

You have some wonderful suggestions, and here's the top one of the day:
Attached below in Ellen's email is an excellent tutorial that Ellen made re: binding a quilt.  And here's what I sent to Charles (because of your suggestion - THANKS!) to see if we can have a tutorial section under Community Service:

Hey Charles.
The Community Service Charity Bee has been asked from time to time how to do some quilting skills.  The bee members would like to ask if you could add a TUTORIAL section under Community Services's drop down menu.

One skill that came up today was adding binding to a quilt.  Ellen Nelson has made a tutorial for it with excellent pictures and instructions. (see attached in her email below.)  Could that be the first one? Also, will it be possible to link to other tutorials on the web?
example:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vCWpxBRs20 (Preview)

Thanks,
Terri

Unable to attach Ellen's PDF, I substituted this tutorial which may be helpful to some.

Gotta love this guild and all the great people!
Here's what he said about adding tutorials, pretty cool!!!

I actually need to watch that.  I haven't even started binding my first [and only] quilt.    I've been mulling over another section for the navigation menu.  It might be worth coming up with another menu item...something along the lines of 'Resources.'   Maybe an area geared toward beginners.....groups of video links, that kind of thing.  I should actually be able to imbed the video into the website too.

Here's just some of what we've been doing this month.

The backing for Horse Quilt #2
 is a perfect match.
As you might recall, and for you
new to the charity bee, Jan has
already made a horse quilt from
other horse panels, and then these
were found.

Joan brought scraps to the
meeting to fill the dog beds.

Kathy cutting.
Maybe some of you will want to sew up a mega log cabin block for preemies  or Prevent Child Abuse (PCA) kids. We could get some cutters  to  feed you the logs. The center could be any size but recommendation is to cut something at least 3.5" square and then go from that to add each log.  Easy peasy, right?

Another preemie quilt
from a neat block.
Since there are 4 machines
and we have thread, maybe we could start the log cabin with the same 3.5" or 4" center and then cut 2.5" - 3.5" strips and mix them up so each "cabin" could be a bit different in placement, but same fabrics. We could just keep adding logs (we're strong  so can do that nicely) until the block is 24" or 30" or so for the preemies.  After we make 4 of those, then we could make 4  larger ones for the PCA kids.  OR we could make the PCA kids ones first.

Would anyone like to sew up 3 or 4 dog  bags that can be handed out at the Guild meeting? Some members said they'd take one home to fill up and sew closed and then bring back  (could take several months to fill one) if we had the bags to give them.

Some of our fair members will be on a  jaunty Holiday.  We might turn a little green with envy, but for sure are happy for you!

cya Wednesday morning any time after 9:30.

I've been working on a rather complicated non-quilting project.   After roughly 50 hours of work...I would like to present the new Cotton Patch Quilters website!  It is still at the old web address.

COTTON PATCH QUILTERS WEBPAGE & NEWSLETTER

All of the information that was on the old website has been incorporated into the new site.

There are two social media updates...

We now have a Twitter account:

We also have a new Facebook page. There was an technical issue with the old Facebook page, so if you are already following the old Facebook page, please join the new one here:

Three highlights:

- There is now a blog built into the website.   I will be posting announcements, news, events, workshops, photographs, etc.  New blog posts will automatically show up on the new CPQ Facebook on Twitter pages.   You can also help promote CPQ events with a single click on a blog post to share to your Facebook and Twitter friends!

- The MembersOnly area can still be accessed with the same password that was used in the old website.  You no longer need the username.

- The new website is smartphone and tablet friendly.   iPhones, iPads, Android phones and tablets will see a version specifically formatted for them!
